A new boozer has been put forward to challenge the Crowie’s reign over Crows Nest as the suburb's only major pub.
What happened: Last Wednesday, plans for the Royal Crow Hotel were put forward to North Sydney Council. The proposed site, if approved, would become a 500-person pub across the road from the Crows Nest Metro Station at 7-11 Clarke Street, currently home to a number of retail and hospitality businesses.
Drink up: While Crows Nest is home to many smaller taverns — from izakayas to up-market wine bars — the largest watering hole has always been the Crows Nest Hotel, often referred to as the Crowie.
How much: The project has a cost estimate in excess of $3 million dollars, and is being led by company TH Investments (Crows Nest). The only other business registered to this company is the Fredo Pub, a venue along the Macleay River in the Mid North Coast.
Ca-ching: Planning documents submitted to the council claim that, as a “third place”, the Royal Crow Hotel would contribute to the “social vitality” of Crows Nest, and become a place where one can “relax, wind down and express their emotions”.
Of course, given this is a “third space” in the state of New South Wales, it wouldn’t be complete without a room full of pokies. The venue's gaming room is set out for the ground level and will be accessible from the street.
