The best hikes of Ku-ring-gai on Sydney’s North Shore

For novices and hardcore mountaineers alike, the protected reserves of the upper North Shore hold some of the best nature walks in Sydney.

Looking to spend more of your weekends out and about in nature? If you live around the North Shore area, you have access to some of the most beautiful hiking trails and bushwalks right at your doorstep (or, at worst, a short drive away).

Here are some of the best in the Ku-ring-gai area.

Bungaroo Track

This St Ives trail will take you down along Middle Harbour Creek. At its end you will find a stepping stone crossing, where you can continue onto Governor Phillip Track. Following this trail to its terminus will lead you to Forestville.

Length: 3.6km loop

Entrance: Bungaroo Reserve, next to 79 Hunter Avenue

Sheldon Forest Track

Just between the stations of Pymble and Turramurra, the Sheldon Forest is a protected area of bushland kept intact amidst surrounding suburbia.

Along this trail you’ll find the last remnants of the endangered Sydney Turpentine Ironbark Forest and Blue Gum High Forest.

Entrance to the trail can be found along Warragal Rd.

Length: 1.7km, one way

Entrance: Opposite 9 Warragal Road

Two Creeks Track

This longer trail will take you from East Lindfield to the bottom of Roseville Bridge, passing Gordon Creek, Moores Creek, and Middle Harbour.

Length: 6 km one way

Entrance: Adjacent to 1 Slade Avenue

Bobbin Head Loop Track

Starting at North Turramurra’s Sphinx Memorial, built in the early 20th century by a WW1 veteran, this loop track leads down to Cowan Creek.

The Warrimoo Track and Sphinx Track make this into a loop, following the creek back to Turramurra.

The return track closes at 4pm, and the gates to the Sphinx Memorial carpark close overnight from 7pm.

Length: 10km loop

Entrance: Sphinx Memorial, Memorial Road

Blackbutt Creek Track

Trek through this tall forest of Blackbutts, Turpentines and Peppermint trees in Gordon. A shorter trail following Blackbutt Creek.

Length: 2.4km one way

Entrance: Opposite 20 Vale Street

Koola Park to Rocky Creek Track

This walk through Garigal National Park is known for its abundant birdlife in the mornings and evenings. Starting in Koola Park, this hike across Hawkesbury sandstone soils and ironstone outcrops leads back around to quiet streets of East Killara.

Length: 4.3km loop

Entrance: Koola Park

Resolute Track

One for those really looking to get away, the Resolute Track can be found in the Northernmost parts of the region, starting along West Head Road.

Along the trail you can find an Aboriginal engraving site and the Red Hands Cave.

The hike finishes up at the isolated Resolute Beach, facing Palm Beach across the Pittwater.

Length: 5km loop

Entrance: Resolute Picnic Area
