11 spots to find a sweet treat on the North Shore

Looking for something sweet on a slow-moving afternoon?

Let me set the scene.

It’s nearing 3:30pm. Morale is running low. Your last stores of caffeine are running dry. How can you make it through to 5pm?

Then, a ray of sunshine breaks through these dreary thoughts clouding your mind. The ray of sunshine is a warm, toasty almond croissant. A tart, doughy pastry. A baklava, a scroll, a danish, a slice of ever so subtle and delicate cake, or something entirely different — in short, a sweet treat.

Here’s your guide to the best spots to find a sweet treat on the North Shore.

Bourke Street Bakery North Sydney

First established in Surry Hills around 2004, Bourke Street Bakery has since expanded as a franchise across Sydney, most recently opening two locations in Sydney's north, in Neutral Bay and the North Sydney CBD. An institution of Sydney afternoon snacks. We recommend the Rhubarb Danish.

Where: 6/1 Denison Street, 25 Grosvenor Street

Closes: 5pm, 4pm

Maggio’s Cammeray

Sitting down at the other end of Miller street you’ll find Maggio’s, another staple of North Shore sweet treats. Along with buttery croissants and slices of various cakes, Maggio’s also sells their own biscotti. We recommend the sfogliatella.

Where: 457 Miller St

Closes: 4pm weekdays, 3pm weekends

Lode pies and pastries

Whether you’re looking for something sweet or savoury, Lode pies and pastries has you covered. Experimenting with unique flavours and combinations, we recommend Lode if you’re looking to stray away from pastry classics and try something new, like a yuzu tart or banana and pecan croissant. Get in quick though: doors close at 3pm.

Where: 73 Miller st

Closes: 3pm

Knafeh: can you?

One big question looms over the reputation of the North Shore as a sweet treat haven… can you get a knafeh though?

Though certainly much harder to find than out west, you certainly can get your hands on a knafeh in the north.

If you’re closer to the bridge, Thelma and Louise in Neutral Bay is your best bet, where you can try “Taytehs Knafeh”. If you’re in the upper North Shore, you can also find Knafeh at Tetas Lebanese Restaurant in Roseville Chase.

Knafeh is a layered pastry of dough, cheese, sugary syrup and nuts most commonly regarded as having originated from the Palestinian city of Nablus.

Where: 1 Hayes St, Neutral Bay, 25 Babbage Rd, Roseville Chase

Closes: 5pm, late

Flour Shop, Turramurra

This bakery found in the upper North Shore region, Flour Shop, puts out a new menu each week of the sweet and savoury goods they will have ready for the weekend. Check it out this weekend to try the lemon morning buns, sour cherry and pistachio amaretto, or portuguese tarts. Open Friday to Sunday.

Where: 16 Princes Street, Turramurra

Closes: 3pm

Infinity Bakery Lindfield

Infinity Bakery has been serving bread, pastries, and cakes across Sydney since the 90s. Their North Shore franchise, nestled inside Lindfield Shopping Village, is conveniently located for any Lindfield locals looking for a quick treat.

Pattison’s Patisserie

With bakeries littered across greater Sydney, Pattison’s Patisseries is probably one of the most prolific and easy to find spots to get some baked goods. Find them in Chatwood, Northbridge, Hornsby and more.

Where: Everywhere!

Closes: 5:30pm

Kürtosh

Much like Pattison’s, Kürtosh can be found seemingly anywhere in Sydney. This franchise specialises in a traditional Hungarian pastry known as chimney cake, with a flaky outside and soft interior. Kürtosh has locations in both Crows Nest and Chatswood.

Where: 110 Willoughby Road, 345 Victoria Ave

Closes: 9:30pm

The Green Bakery

Got a sweet tooth but a green lifestyle? Green Bakery in North Sydney proclaims that “everyone should be able to devour a piece of cake irrespective of dietary needs”. This bakery specialises in cakes and pastries that are vegan, dairy-free, egg free, gluten free and more.

Where: 25/29 Berry St, North Sydney

Closes: 4pm

Cornocopia Narremburn

Easy to miss but hard to forget, Cornocopia runs a small bakery in the Narremburn Shopping Village, as well as another store in Castle Cove. Stop by for nutella croissants and slices of carrot cake, with gluten-free pastries available too. If you’re looking for something savoury, these guys do a great Moroccan Lamb pie, too.

Where: 298 Willoughby Rd, 16 Deepwater Rd

Closes: 4pm

C9 Gelato

Looking for something cold instead of warm? Swing by C9 Chocolate and Gelato in Crows Nest for some house made gelato, along with donuts, crepes, and thickshakes.
