The Spofforth Street solution? North Sydney proposes bike lanes and a pedestrian crossing

The changes would come as part of a larger plan for better cycling infrastructure in the region.

Shared between the two councils of North Sydney and Mosman, the intersection of Spofforth Street and Rangers Road has long been a site of controversy, with locals airing concerns around safety and congestion.

Now, North Sydney Council has pushed ahead with their own solution for the busy intersection: dedicated bike lanes and a pedestrian zebra crossing.

What happened: As part of a larger rollout of pedestrian and cycling infrastructure across the region, North Sydney Council has released images of a proposed upgrade to the part of Rangers Road connecting to Spofforth Street.

These upgrades would be funded by the state government and would see:

  • A raised zebra crossing for pedestrians at the intersection,

  • Separated bike lanes on the southern side of Rangers Road and western side of Spofforth Street.

Council documents indicate that this would involve narrowing Spofforth Street and removing two bus stops along it.

More bike paths: The larger plan would see a continuous, separated bike path travelling from Forsyth Park to Rangers Avenue. It also includes more pedestrian crossings and kerb build outs.

  • Lost parking spaces, such as those along Yeo Street, are proposed to be replaced by converting Barry Street to one-way northbound with 26 new parking spots.

What now: North Sydney Council is currently seeking public feedback on the proposed changes. The proposal is open for comment until March 29.
