🔵 Kapterian foots the bill

Plus: December What's On, why gas prices are so high and flying trampolines on the Pacific Highway.

⏱️ The 63rd edition of our newsletter is a five-minute read.

Morning all,

We got some pretty wild weather on Wednesday. Between the mercury hitting the high 30s, thunder and a sudden downpour, you might have also caught a trampoline flying across the Pacific Highway.

Cheers to Dylan, who let us use the photos he caught of the flying trampoline. Remember to keep them tied down when strong winds are forecast!

Also — a few of our readers have notified us that our section toward the bottom of the newsletter, looking at national news, appears blacked out. We think it should be fixed now, but if there’s still an issue, please let us know.

🗞️ Anyway, let’s get into the rest of the news.

HEARD THIS WEEK👂

⛽️ Nicolette Boele and Ed Husic would like gas companies to stop ripping us off

A team up between the North Shore and Western Sydney? Certainly not on my 2025 bingo card.

The Member for Bradfield garnered unlikely allies early this week, calling on the government to export less of our gas in order to reduce domestic prices.

Labor’s Ed Husic, representing the Western Sydney seat of Chifley, broke ranks from his party on Monday, speaking in support of Nicolette Boele’s motion, which he regarded as “not a radical proposition”.

What happened: The motion brought forward by Boele states that south-east Australia is at risk of running low on gas as a result of selling too much of it overseas.

  • Rising energy prices have been a significant issue for many Australians. According to the Australian Energy Regulator, gas prices have tripled in the last decade.

  • As a result, Boele has called on the government to tighten industry regulations, so that if gas is extracted in Australia it must be offered to Australians first — at a “reasonable price” — before any of it is sold overseas.

🎪 What’s on for December

Christmas markets, bug hunts, military history, book fairs and a huge festival up on the Northern Northern Beaches. Beware of hippies with their yoga and cold plunges.

👩‍⚖️ Kapterian ordered to pay Boele's costs after failed challenge to Bradfield election result

For failed Liberal political candidate Gisele Kapterian, 2025 just got a little worse.

On Thursday, a Federal Court judge directed Kapterian - who stood for the seat of Bradfield at the 2025 election - to pay the court costs of Nicolette Boele, the Independent candidate who won the seat.

After an incredibly tight race, Kapterian lost, but petitioned the Court of Disputed Returns to overturn the result.

LOOKING NATIONALLY 👀

💰️ David Littleproud keeps saying the shift to renewable energy is going to cost $9 trillion. This is not accurate.

Nationals Leader David Littleproud is one of a few politicians claiming the energy shift will cost $9 trillion.

He got the number from a report by the University of Queensland, Melbourne Uni and Princeton University.

The people behind the figure he is quoting have even gone so far as to release a statement pointing out that it is being misrepresented.

The report in question does have the $9 trillion figure, but it’s not the cost of Australia reaching net zero – and certainly not what taxpayers or households will be paying.

In reality, the $9 trillion number is made up of every dollar of investment Australia might see into the energy shift industry between now and 2060.
