As we move into the winter months, the Lorikeet has compiled a guide for events this month, from live music and film festivals to footy and bushwalks.
Breaking Ground Exhibition
Breaking Ground is an exhibition of student paintings and drawings from the local Willoughby Arts Centre. Curated by Yvonne East, a tutor from the centre.
When: May 28 – June 14

Curlew Camp Exhibition
Curlew Camp features works centred around the famed artist camp on the southeastern shores of the lower North Shore. The exhibition features works from leading Australian artists of the period, such as Arthur Streeton and Tom Roberts, as well as contemporary artists responding to the site and its heritage.

Seventh Wonder
Led by Australian vocalist Bloom, this ensemble will be performing Fleetwood Mac’s Rumours album, along with a selection of the band’s greatest hits. Featuring strings from the Sydney Pops Orchestra, the tribute act will take to the stage at the The Lounge at Chatswood Concourse.

Beer, Footy, Food Festival
Keen to celebrate the Bears return to the NRL? Or just looking for somewhere sunny to spend your Sunday?
This Sunday, Good Beer Co is hosting a ‘Beer, Footy, Food Festival, at North Sydney Oval. Watch three mini matches between international rugby teams including Ukraine Tridents and Philippine Admirals, before the main match kicks off at 5pm, with the North Sydney Bears facing off against the Penrith Panthers in the NSW cup.
Food trucks will serve a variety of international cuisines and beer from local breweries. Tickets via the festival website.

Sydney Film Festival at the Hayden Orpheum Picture Palace
If you’re keen on taking part in the film festival, but want to avoid the hustle and bustle of the State Theatre, you can enjoy a variety of festival participating films at the Hayden Orpheum in Cremorne. Films screening include Ari Aster’s latest, Eddington, Tilda Swinton and Michael Shannon in The End, and Australian Jacob Elordi’s latest picture, On Swift Horses.

Charity Clothes Swap
This Mosman event is hosted by Calida Ellora, a non-profit organisation fighting against fast fashion and textile waste. The event asks participants to bring six quality clothing items “you would proudly give to a friend”, to be exchanged with others. The event page explicitly states that they will not accept any fast fashion items. All proceeds go toward the Women's Resilience Centre, a service dedicated to supporting women impacted by domestic violence and abuse.

Bird Watching Bushwalk — Hornsby Heights
Interested in birds? Native wildlife? Or just a good walk in nature?
This guided bushwalk, showcasing the flora and fauna of Berowra Creek, is suitable for adults and teenagers. Bring binoculars for birdwatching as you walk, and keep an eye out for the male rose robin, with its signature bright pink chest. Book for free via the Hornsby Council Website.
