Ku-ring-gai “electrify everything” rebates to help residents make the jump from gas to electric

While overall, electric appliances are cheaper than gas, the upfront cost can still prove a challenge to those who may benefit. With these new rebates of up to $3000, Ku-ring-gai council is hoping to help residents looking to make the jump.

Under Ku-ring-gai council’s new “Electrify Everything” scheme, residents of the local government area will be able to claim up to $3000 in rebates when fitting out their house with electric energy.

Starting from the 28th of July, new rebates can be claimed on the purchase and installation of solar panels, batteries, hot water systems, and induction cooktops.

Electrifying does not always mean installing new power systems, however; the scheme also includes improvements to the existing energy efficiency of homes. As such, upgrades to the insulation and windows of houses are also able to be claimed, helping residents keep their homes warm in the winter, and cool in the summer, while using less power.

In a statement, Ku-ring-gai Mayor Christine Kay said that “switching from gas to electric is one of the quickest ways to make a real impact on reducing greenhouse gas emissions”.

“Switching to all electric is better for your hip-pocket, better for the environment and the healthiest option for your home and family”.

How will these rebates help?

According to Francis Vierboom, CEO of Rewiring Australia, incentives like those Ku-ring-gai council has introduced are crucial to getting more people to switch to clean energy.

"Upgrading from gas to electric appliances run by solar is far cleaner and cheaper, but unfortunately the upfront costs are still a barrier.”

“So even if people are aware of benefits, they may not be able to afford to upgrade. That's why incentives are so critical," Vierboom said.
