🔵 Meat pies, magpies

'Tis the season...

⏱️ The 41st edition of our newsletter is a five-minute read.

Morning,

Huw here. Thank you all for your many suggestions of bakeries to scout out for the best pie in town. I have my work cut out for me now. Time to get eating.

I managed to get my first review, of Romeo’s Pie Cafe’s beef and mushroom pie, out yesterday. While I’m a big fan of this bakery, I did have a small explosion at the back of the pastry encasing the fillings.

In other new things this week: magpies. They’ve been marking territory and building nests, and are already swooping down at the heads of cyclists and pedestrians.

Keep an eye out for our winged friends, and read below for some tips on avoiding their beaks.

“The pie should be meaty and tasty with rich brown gravy, not grey or black! The filling should not fall into your lap when hot, or conversely, stick to the roof of your mouth.”

I’ve been doing a lot of reading on what makes a good pie. This is what the “Official Great Aussie Pie Competition” website has to say about fillings. ↑
