Protestors win: Milsons Point post office to remain open

“What it means is our most vulnerable — elderly, disabled and health restricted residents — will [continue to] have access to an essential service”.

Following community uproar and a protest outside Kirribili house, Milsons Point residents have had their demands answered, with their local post office remaining in operation.

📺 Previously: The Milsons Point post office was originally set to close in November after the landlord, Transport for NSW, raised the rent. Auspost claimed this made the location “unviable”.

  • Residents against the closure protested on the grounds that the office provided crucial community infrastructure to elderly and disabled residents of Milson’s Point.

  • Opposition mounted a Town Hall meeting, attended by state and federal politicians, and organised a rally which marched to Kirribilli house on September 14.

“Australia Post did not undertake any community engagement in making this brutal, profit-before-people decision”, Michael Brakka, a representative of the Milson Precinct, said at the protest.

🪧 Protesters win: Today, Australia Post told the Lorikeet that they had reached “mutually acceptable commercial terms” with the landlord, and that the post office would remain open.

“Australia Post thanks TfNSW for working with us to secure a revised, mutually agreed long term lease. Australia Post looks forward to continuing to provide services in Milsons Point.”

🗣️ Local voice: Venietta Slama-Powell, an organiser of the protest for the post office, told the Lorikeet the community was “elated” at the decision.

  • “What it means to us is that our most vulnerable — elderly, disabled and health restricted residents — will have access to an essential service … it's a huge victory for the community”.
