Two-way tolling on Harbour Bridge confirmed to return by late 2028
The Minister for Transport claims the decision will correct a “long-standing inequity”.
Motorists will be tolled for crossing to either side of the Sydney Harbour Bridge, NSW Minister for Transport John Graham announced this morning. Previously, commuters were only tolled when travelling south across the bridge.
The change will come into effect in late 2028.
Graham claims the reinstatement of two-way tolling — previously in place from the bridge’s opening in 1932 to 1970 — will be used to maintain a $60 toll cap for road users.
This cap was introduced in January 2024 as a temporary cost-of-living relief measure, but has now been extended to a permanent basis, funded by two-way tolling on the Harbour Bridge.
The cap puts a maximum $60 weekly spend on Sydney roads. The remainder can be reclaimed by motorists, with a maximum rebate of $340.
The cap aims to limit tolls for motorists commuting from Western Sydney and the Central Coast, who disproportionately cop the brunt of Sydney tolls.
