Where does this unused track at Waverton station lead?

You asked: we found out. Here's the story behind that unused track at Waverton station.

When we published our first foray into North Shore train mysteries yesterday, it seemed to only raise more questions. Today we answered one of them: where does that other track at Waverton station lead to?

At Waverton station, you can see a seemingly unused track heading down towards the harbour. However, it's not actually unused, and it's not there for no reason.

These tracks actually head down to Lavender Bay Station, which is still there, and in fact, still functions as a storage area for railcars when they’re not in use.

Lavender Bay Station was actually built in 1924, to temporarily replace Milsons Point Station while the Harbour Bridge was being built. If you use the satellite image mode on your phones map application, you can still see the path the train line once ran.

Alternatively, if you head down to Wendy’s Secret Garden, you can see the Lavender Bay railyard down the bottom through the fence.
